ISLAMABAD: Pakistan To Convene International Afghan Refugee Conference. Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate two-day international conference on Afghan refugees on February 17th. Ministers and senior officials from different countries will attend the international conference, on February 17-18.

Government of Pakistan is convening the international conference on refugees in collaboration with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The event is to mark 40 years of Afghan refugees presence in Pakistan.

According to a press release by the Foreign Office, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi would be participating. Along with ministers and senior officials from around 20 countries. It further said that United Nations, multilateral developments banks, civil society and private sector will also participate in it. “This Conference is taking place at an important juncture when peace efforts in Afghanistan are making progress,” it added. “Pakistan is confident that the Conference will reinforce international efforts to bring about a renewed focus on the Afghan refugees. It will also help in building a positive narrative on refugees. Especially at a time when borders are being closed on them and millions are being made stateless under nationalistic and ideological pretences,” the foreign office added.

The conference will highlight and celebrate the exemplary compassion, generosity and hospitality exhibited by Pakistan. In hosting one of the largest refugee populations in the world. The Conference will further identify key developments and milestones in the 40 years long evolution of the Afghan refugee situation.
