CANBERRA – Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday appointed Rachel Noble as the Chief of a major spy agency. This is the first time an Australian Intelligence Agency has had a female chief.

The first women to hold that position, Noble will become the next director general of the Australian Signal Directorate (ASD). The agency’s job is to intercept electronic communications from foreign countries.

Rachel Nobel will begin her new responsibilities in February 2020. She will lead ASD in a time with increasing cyber-attacks concerns in Australia. Noble will replace Mike Burges. Burges was appointed as DG of Australian Security Intelligence Organization.

According to a report by Reuters, Australian Signal Directorate (ASD) has concluded in March that the Chinese Ministry of State Security was indeed responsible for a cyber-attack on the Australian Parliament and three major political parties. However, Canberra decided not to go public with these findings. She feared it would risk Australia’s trade relations with China, two sources said.
