ISLAMABAD: WHO appreciates Pakistan’s response to recent Snow Fall, Avalanche. World Health Organisation, on Wednesday, appreciated the prompt measures and timely response of Pakistan.
Pakistan’s swift response to provide relief to the people in the wake of recent heavy snow and severe weather conditions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and meanwhile other parts of the country were appreciated within the country as well.
Dr Palitha Mahipala is WHO country representative in Pakistan. She assured WHO’s support to the government of Pakistan to respond to this public health emergency.
Several parts of Pakistan came under a spell of heavy rain, snowfall, flash floods, avalanches and landslides in between 11 and 12 January 2020. While in AJK, snowfall and avalanches affected mainly four villages with 14,000 population.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 21 deaths in Balochistan and almost 5 deaths in the KPK province. Mostly in three districts of Mardan, Swat and Upper Dir.
Dr Palitha Mahipala visited Muzaffarabad twice to hand over emergency supplies and equipment to the Prime Minister of AJK. Speaker AJK Assembly, Minister for Population AJK and Commandant were also present on the occasion. WHO appreciates Pakistan’s response.
